The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has opened applications for its PhD programmes for the Spring semester 2026-27, with candidates having until October 20 to submit their applications. The programmes are open to eligible candidates across the institute’s departments, centres and schools. The tentative selection process, including interviews and/or written tests, is scheduled for November 16–21.

Classes for the new semester will begin on January 11, 2027. PhD students will also have the option of enrolling in IIT Roorkee’s Joint Doctoral Degree Programme, subject to the applicable programme requirements.

Who Can Apply?

The eligibility requirements vary by department, so applicants must meet both the institute-level criteria and the specific requirements prescribed by the department, centre or school. Candidates with a master’s degree must have a minimum CGPA of 6.0 on a 10-point scale or 60% marks. For SC, ST and PwD candidates, the minimum requirement is a CGPA of 5.50 or 55% marks.

Applicants are generally required to have qualified in a recognised national-level examination such as GATE, CEED, JEST, UGC-NET or CSIR-NET, including the lectureship (Assistant Professorship)/PhD-only category, or hold a national-level fellowship, depending on the programme. Some candidates are exempt from this requirement.

Those with a BTech degree or MSc and a CGPA of 8.0 or above from Ministry of Education-funded technical institutions, formerly classified as CFTIs, can apply without qualifying in one of the specified national-level tests.

Candidates holding a four-year bachelor’s degree with a minimum CGPA of 7.50 or 75% marks can also apply if they have qualified in a relevant national-level test or hold a national-level fellowship. Applicants with a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an IIT and a CGPA of 8.0 or above are similarly exempt from the national-level test requirement.

Meeting the minimum eligibility criteria does not automatically secure admission. Candidates must also satisfy the requirements of the relevant academic unit and clear the institute’s selection process.
