Asset Homes, one of Kerala’s leading real estate developers, has introduced advanced Diaphragm Wall (D-Wall) technology for its premium residential project, Asset Vismayam at Sasthamangalam, becoming one of the first builders in the state to adopt the globally recognised construction method for a highly congested urban project.
The technology has been implemented to address one of the biggest challenges in modern city construction—executing deep, multi-level basements while ensuring the structural safety of neighbouring buildings in densely populated areas.
Announcing the development, Sunil Kumar V., Founder and Managing Director of Asset Homes, said the D-Wall system was selected to provide maximum safety before excavation began. He noted that while the technology is still relatively new in Kerala, it is widely regarded as the global benchmark for underground construction in cities where space is limited and safety is paramount.
“Given the highly congested nature of our Sasthamangalam site, we chose the D-Wall system to provide the surrounding community with the highest assurance of safety before any deep excavation began,” he said.
Unlike conventional circular piling methods, the project features a continuous reinforced concrete retaining wall constructed in sequential sections, each approximately five metres long and sixty centimetres thick. The wall depth was customised based on the excavation requirements of the site.
During construction, a specialised slurry mixture was introduced into the excavation trench to stabilise the surrounding soil and prevent collapse. This process minimised soil movement and protected neighbouring properties from the earliest stages of development.
According to Asset Homes, the D-Wall serves a dual purpose by acting as a temporary earth-retaining system during excavation before becoming the permanent retaining wall for the completed basement. This integrated approach eliminates the need for separate temporary shoring structures, improves construction efficiency, and helps reduce project timelines.
The company also highlighted the technology’s advantages during Kerala’s heavy monsoon season, noting that the rigid retaining structure creates a secure excavation perimeter, enhances worker safety, and contributes to the long-term stability and durability of the building’s foundation.
Structural consultant Arun Nadig said the adoption of D-Wall technology at Asset Vismayam reflects the evolving needs of Kerala’s urban infrastructure. As basement parking and underground facilities become increasingly essential in expanding cities, he said the project establishes a new benchmark for safe, sustainable, and technologically advanced urban construction in the state.
