Vedanta Limited has strengthened its commitment to workplace diversity and inclusion, announcing that 75 transgender employees are now part of its workforce across multiple business units. The announcement comes ahead of the International Transgender Day of Visibility, highlighting the company’s continued efforts to create equitable employment opportunities.
The transgender workforce is spread across key verticals including Vedanta Aluminium, Hindustan Zinc, Sesa Goa, FACOR, and Cairn Oil & Gas. Since launching focused hiring initiatives in 2022, the company has steadily increased representation across operations, corporate, and technical roles.
Transgender employees at Vedanta are engaged in a wide range of functions, including operations, finance, logistics, human resources, healthcare services, and corporate social responsibility. The company has also enabled internal mobility, allowing employees to grow and transition across roles based on skills and opportunities.
To support an inclusive work environment, Vedanta has implemented comprehensive policies such as Equal Opportunity, Anti-harassment, and LGBTQIA+ inclusion frameworks. Dedicated provisions for transgender employees include a gender affirmation policy offering financial assistance of up to ₹2 lakh and 30 days of leave, housing support, and education assistance of up to ₹1 lakh. A structured buddy programme further supports onboarding and workplace integration.
The company has also addressed structural challenges by introducing gender-neutral washrooms and extending housing policies to include company townships, helping employees navigate issues related to rental discrimination. Partnerships with organisations such as Periferry and National Network for Transgender Persons have supported outreach, sensitisation, and documentation assistance.
Initiatives like ZINCLUSION have further promoted awareness and acceptance across the organisation, with community members sharing their lived experiences. Regular town halls, mentorship programmes, and leadership interactions ensure ongoing engagement and support.
A transgender employee from Hindustan Zinc highlighted the impact of these efforts, noting that inclusive policies, mental wellness support, and a respectful workplace culture have enabled both personal and professional growth.
Vedanta’s approach focuses on fostering dignity, safety, and long-term career development, reinforcing its broader commitment to building inclusive workplaces where diversity is valued and individuals can thrive.
