India is accelerating the entry of foreign universities under the National Education Policy 2020, aiming to make global degrees significantly more affordable for domestic students.
According to Vineet Joshi, Secretary of Higher Education, international programmes offered within India could cost up to 60% less than studying abroad, primarily by eliminating expenses related to travel, visas, and living costs.
The push is supported by streamlined regulations from the University Grants Commission, which has already issued approvals to multiple foreign institutions to establish campuses across the country. These developments are expected to expand access to global-quality education while strengthening India’s position as an international higher education hub.
Officials say the initiative will also boost enrolment capacity and foster research collaboration, aligning with national targets to increase participation in higher education.
As global institutions establish a local presence, the model signals a broader shift toward internationalisation within India’s education system—bringing global learning opportunities closer to home.
