The Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani and the Indian AI Research Organisation (IAIRO) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen India’s artificial intelligence (AI) research ecosystem through collaboration in research, innovation, education and talent development.
The partnership aims to bridge academia and applied AI research by fostering collaborative innovation, knowledge exchange and the development of future-ready AI capabilities aligned with national priorities.
Under the agreement, the two institutions will undertake joint research programmes in emerging areas of artificial intelligence, pursue research grants from national and international funding agencies, and explore the establishment of advanced AI research infrastructure through external funding support. They will also jointly organise executive education programmes, specialised certification courses, workshops, conferences and technical seminars to enhance AI capabilities across academia and industry.
The collaboration further provides for academic exchanges between the two organisations. Faculty members and researchers from BITS Pilani will deliver lectures and mentor scientists and engineers at IAIRO, while experts from IAIRO will participate in guest lectures, mentoring programmes and other academic activities at BITS Pilani. The institutions expect the two-way engagement to strengthen research capabilities, encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and accelerate the translation of research into practical AI applications.
BITS Pilani Vice-Chancellor Prof. V. Ramgopal Rao said the rapid growth of artificial intelligence has increased the responsibility of higher education institutions to prepare future AI professionals. He said the partnership reflects the institute’s commitment to advancing India’s AI ecosystem through high-impact research, innovation and industry-academia collaboration, while creating opportunities to develop talent capable of addressing national priorities and contributing globally.
Dr. Amit Sheth, Founding Director and Chief Executive Officer of IAIRO, said India’s leadership in artificial intelligence would depend on effective collaboration among academia, research institutions and industry. He noted that the partnership seeks to accelerate innovation, talent development and the creation of AI solutions that are scientifically robust, socially responsible and aligned with the country’s long-term technological goals.
Prof. Sanjay Chaudhary, Collaborations and Operations Lead at IAIRO, said sustained partnerships between academic institutions and research organisations are essential for meaningful AI innovation. He added that the collaboration would strengthen knowledge sharing, interdisciplinary research and the development of AI solutions addressing both national priorities and global challenges.
The MoU also provides a framework for organising joint conferences, research symposiums, science exhibitions and outreach programmes, while facilitating the sharing of academic resources and research infrastructure to support long-term collaboration in artificial intelligence.
