IIT Mandi Marks 17th Foundation Day, Highlights ₹120 Crore Research Growth and ₹700 Crore Expansion Plan

The event brought together leading figures from academia, industry, and global research to discuss the growing role of artificial intelligence, robotics,and emerging technologies in shaping India’s future.

Indian Institute of Technology Mandi celebrated its 17th Foundation Day, reaffirming its commitment to nation-building through innovation, research, and technology-driven development. The event brought together leading figures from academia, industry, and global research to discuss the growing role of artificial intelligence, robotics,and emerging technologies in shaping India’s future.

Recognised for its cutting-edge work across AI, robotics, quantum technology, and advanced materials, IIT Mandi continues to align its research agenda with India’s long-term vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. Over the past three years, the institute has undertaken research projects worth over ₹120 crore and announced plans to invest an additional ₹700 crore toward strategic infrastructure expansion.

The celebrations were attended by prominent dignitaries, including Kris Gopalakrishnan, who served as Chief Guest, and Oussama Khatib as Distinguished Guest. Other notable attendees included Timothy Gonsalves, Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi, and Vinay Kumar Pathak.

In his address, Laxmidhar Behera highlighted the institute’s transformation into a research-intensive hub focused on experiential learning and interdisciplinary innovation. He noted that IIT Mandi’s efforts are geared toward nurturing “future-ready leaders” capable of driving technological self-reliance and contributing to national development goals.

Delivering the keynote, Kris Gopalakrishnan emphasized that India stands at the forefront of an “intelligence revolution,” with institutions like IIT Mandi playing a crucial role in fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and globally competitive technologies. Meanwhile, Oussama Khatib underscored the institute’s potential to evolve into a global innovation hub, drawing parallels with Silicon Valley due to its unique blend of academic excellence and natural environment.

The institute also showcased key milestones, including over 177 funded research projects, more than 200 consultancy projects worth ₹17 crore, and the establishment of interdisciplinary research centres and global collaborations.

The event concluded with felicitation of students, faculty, and staff for outstanding achievements in academics, research, and sports, reinforcing IIT Mandi’s growing role in positioning India as a global leader in technology and higher education.
