Marking the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, observed annually on 11 February, Jitendra Kumar, Managing Director of Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to strengthening the participation of women across India’s biotechnology and innovation ecosystem.
In a statement, Kumar said BIRAC is building an inclusive and innovation-driven ecosystem where women scientists, entrepreneurs and leaders can thrive. He highlighted dedicated women-focused bio-incubation support and leadership development initiatives such as the Women’s Leadership in STEM Entrepreneurship programme, aimed at strengthening the pipeline of women innovators across research, startups and industry.
BIRAC is also contributing to broader national efforts through early-stage research funding and translational innovation opportunities for women scientists. Its collaborations with national and global partners focus on mentorship, leadership training, network access and entrepreneurial capability building for mid-career and emerging women leaders in STEM.
The council continues to support women-led startups through funding pathways, seed support via incubator networks, and sector-focused Grand Challenges addressing areas including women’s health and inclusive innovation.
“Empowering women in science is not only a matter of equity but a strategic imperative for accelerating India’s bioeconomy and ensuring innovation reflects societal needs,” Kumar said, adding that BIRAC remains committed to enabling women and girls across the country to pursue scientific careers and lead transformative innovations.
