Renowned sports commentator and senior journalist Shaiju Damodaran has been honoured with the State Sports Council Special Jury Award, becoming the first recipient of the Council’s newly instituted recognition for excellence in sports commentary.
Shaiju, who began his professional journey in journalism, transitioned into sports broadcasting in 2012. Over the years, he has emerged as one of the most distinctive and celebrated Malayalam voices in the sports world.
His breakthrough on the global stage came in 2018, when he delivered Malayalam live commentary for the FIFA World Cup, earning widespread appreciation. He has been associated with the Indian Super League since its inception and has provided commentary for several premier international and national tournaments, including: UEFA Champions League, Euro Cup, Copa America, English Premier League. Cricket World Cup, Nehru Trophy Boat Race, Beyond the sports arena, Shaiju has extended his vocal talent to the film industry, lending his voice to nearly twenty films, further establishing his versatility as a media professional.
Based in Kochi, Shaiju lives with his wife, Asha Akbar, and their two sons, Abhinav and Adhinav.
The award marks a significant milestone in Shaiju’s illustrious career and highlights the growing recognition for sports commentary as an integral part of the sporting experience.
