The institute has moved from the 1001–1200 band in 2026 to 801–1000 in the latest global rankings, with improvements linked to its focus on research, teaching, industry engagement and international collaboration.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi has moved up by 200 places in the THE World University Rankings 2027, advancing from the 1001–1200 band in the previous edition to the 801–1000 band globally.
The improvement comes as the institute continues to focus on academic quality, research, innovation, industry partnerships and international collaborations. The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027 feature 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories, making it the largest edition of the rankings so far.
THE evaluates universities across five broad areas — teaching, research environment, research quality, industry and international outlook. IIT Mandi’s improved position places it among institutions showing progress in the global higher education landscape.
Commenting on the development, Prof. Laxmidhar Behera, Director, IIT Mandi, attributed the improvement to the efforts of the institute’s faculty, students, employees, alumni and partners.
“The improvement of IIT Mandi in THE World University Rankings is indicative of the dedication and hard work put in by all our faculty, students, employees, alumni and partners,” Behera said.
He added that the institute would continue to focus on transformational education, cutting-edge research and innovations aimed at addressing societal challenges.
The institute said its future academic and research strategy would focus on interdisciplinary research, collaborations with academic and industrial partners, and projects addressing regional, national and global challenges.
IIT Mandi, located in Himachal Pradesh’s Kamand Valley, is among the newer IITs established by the Government of India and is recognised as an Institute of National Importance. The institute began operations in 2009 and later shifted its BTech students to its permanent Kamand campus.
Since its establishment, IIT Mandi has undertaken more than 275 research and development projects, with a cumulative value of over ₹120 crore, according to the institute. It has also entered into memoranda of understanding with 11 international and 12 national universities over the past decade.
The latest ranking improvement comes amid growing competition among Indian institutions seeking stronger positions in international university rankings. For IIT Mandi, the move into the 801–1000 band reflects its efforts to strengthen its academic and research ecosystem while expanding its engagement with industry and institutions in India and abroad.
The institute said it aims to build on the progress by further strengthening research, education and innovation and contributing to challenges of importance at the regional, national and international levels.
