Malaysia has launched the world’s first National Planetary Health Action Plan (NPHAP) — a landmark framework designed to embed planetary health principles across every level of national development. Officially unveiled on 20 November 2025, the “whole-of-nation” blueprint was developed by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
The Action Plan aims to realign Malaysia’s progress within planetary boundaries, ensuring that human well-being, environmental protection, and economic resilience advance together rather than in competition. It outlines six key result areas, supported by 53 strategies and 222 actions, tackling challenges such as climate-driven natural crises, sustainable food systems, resilient governance, and public empowerment.
Grounded in Malaysia’s own data, the plan is the product of a rigorous ten-step national engagement process involving scientists, policymakers, youth groups, community leaders, industry representatives, and civil society. The result is a strategy that reflects both national realities and global best practices.
Malaysia’s pioneering effort has already gained global attention, earning recognition at the 2025 Planetary Health Annual Meeting in Rotterdam. By placing planetary health at the center of policymaking, the NPHAP sets a precedent for countries seeking integrated solutions to the intertwined crises of climate, biodiversity, and human health.
