US Leads QS Subject Rankings 2026; India Shows Steady Gains

The United Kingdom follows with 15 top-ranked subjects and 63 top-three positions, while Singapore, Switzerland, and Netherlands also feature strongly

The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 places the United States firmly at the top of global higher education, with universities ranking first in 37 subjects and appearing 88 times in the top three. The United Kingdom follows with 15 top-ranked subjects and 63 top-three positions, while Singapore, Switzerland, and Netherlands also feature strongly.

The rankings assess over 21,000 programmes across 1,900 institutions in 100 countries, reflecting increasing global competition and specialisation. Ben Sowter noted growing momentum from Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America, even as traditional Western systems continue to dominate.

Among US institutions, Harvard University leads with 17 subject-wise number one rankings, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology with 12. India has shown gradual improvement, with institutions such as Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and Indian Institute of Technology Delhi strengthening their positions in engineering and technology disciplines. More Indian universities are entering subject rankings, reflecting rising research output and global visibility, although overall representation in top tiers remains limited compared to leading systems.
