The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have expanded their research collaborations with IBM to advance work in artificial intelligence, quantum computing and next-generation computing systems.
IIT Bombay and IBM will work on sovereign AI, Indic language models, multimodal AI, AI infrastructure and knowledge retrieval. A key focus will be improving AI models so they can support multiple Indian languages more efficiently.
The partnership will also explore multimodal AI applications in programming education, human-AI interaction and intelligent operations across hybrid cloud environments.
IIT Bombay, IISc to Research Agentic AI and Quantum Computing
IISc and IBM will expand research into agentic AI systems, AI applications and quantum-computing algorithms. Their collaboration, which began in 2021, will also examine AI workflows capable of coordinating tasks across hybrid cloud environments.
The research programme will explore lightweight time-series foundation models based on IBM’s Granite model family. Potential applications include electricity-load forecasting, detecting unusual patterns and analysing energy efficiency.
Building on Existing Partnerships
IIT Bombay’s research association with IBM began in 2018, while IISc’s collaboration began in 2021. The expanded programmes build on earlier work in AI, hybrid cloud computing, distributed systems and quantum computing.
The collaborations will also provide students and researchers with opportunities to work on industry-focused challenges and develop applications in AI and advanced computing.
