India’s National Quantum Mission (NQM) has taken a major step forward with the creation of four dedicated quantum fabrication and central facilities, allocated across IIT Bombay, IISc Bengaluru, IIT Kanpur and IIT Delhi. With a combined investment of ₹720 crore, the new centres are designed to build the nation’s quantum-hardware backbone and expand research capacity in next-generation technologies.
The facilities will support work across quantum sensing, quantum computing and quantum materials, giving researchers controlled environments to prototype indigenous devices, test new architectures and accelerate translational research. Access will be open not only to NQM investigators but also to universities, industry partners, start-ups and strategic organisations, positioning the centres as national-level shared infrastructure.
Each institution will specialise in a core domain:
- IIT Bombay and IIT Kanpur – quantum sensing and metrology
- IISc Bengaluru and IIT Bombay – quantum-computing fabrication across superconducting, photonic and spin qubit platforms
- IIT Delhi – quantum materials, device development and characterisation.
