Researchers from the Department of Horticulture at Lovely Professional University (LPU), Phagwara, India, have published a review exploring how fruit peel waste could serve as a sustainable alternative in aquaculture feed. The paper, titled Fruit Peel Waste: A Sustainable Food Source for Fish Culture, appears in World Development Sustainability (Elsevier, 2025).
Authored by Aditi Thakur, Dr. Amit Kotiyal and Joshi Thoudam, the review assesses the nutrient potential of peels from fruits such as citrus, banana and mango as substitutes for conventional ingredients like fishmeal and soybean meal. According to the authors, these residues contain bioactive compounds and essential nutrients that could enhance fish growth, feed conversion efficiency and disease resistance.
