The Indian Institute of Mass Communication (Deemed to be University) has launched its PhD programme, marking a significant academic milestone in the institution’s six-decade-long history. Admissions will be offered for the academic year 2025–26.
The online application process for both full-time and part-time candidates opened on 1 January 2026 and will remain open until 30 January 2026. Applicants with UGC-NET qualification will be directly shortlisted for personal interaction. Part-time candidates without UGC-NET qualification will be required to appear for an entrance examination scheduled for 15 February 2026.
The list of selected candidates will be published on 23 February 2026. Interviews are scheduled to begin from 9 March 2026, with the admission process expected to conclude by 27 March 2026. Coursework for the programme will commence from 1 April 2026.
Speaking at the launch of the PhD admission portal, IIMC vice chancellor Pragya Paliwal Gaur said the programme aims to contribute meaningfully to research aligned with national priorities. She underlined the importance of encouraging research projects that address societal challenges and adopt innovative approaches.
To mark the launch of the programme, a sapling of ‘Kovidara’ was planted on the New Delhi campus, symbolising the beginning of doctoral studies at the institute.
According to the institute, the PhD programme is designed to offer a rigorous academic environment and promote interdisciplinary research in journalism, communication, and related fields. Research areas include journalism, mass communication, digital media, strategic communication, media industry management, film studies, political communication, development communication, advertising, and public relations. The programme aims to strengthen scholarly research and contribute to the evolving body of knowledge in media and communication studies.
